The Torah Origin of The Ancient Igbo-Observatory Lunisolar Calendar
By  Benjamin Chukwunonso Ajufo

Who are the Igbos and where do they come from?  In this topic we are going to evaluate the Ancient Igbo-Observatory lunisolar calendar. The question posed above needs an urgent answer, but then the answers would be given in another article. But for the sake of this write up permit me to give a little description of who the Igbos are.Igbos are a federation of people of ancient origin who are presently and majorly seen in Southern Nigeria.A greater population of Igbos are in in South-Eastern Nigeria. The Scope of Who are Igbos goes beyond the entity called Nigeria because Igbos are seen,in Equitorial Guinea,Cameroun,Mali,Angola,Haiti,Congo,Benin Republic, even the USA etc.It would be correct to say that the Igbos are a nation/a cosmopolitan people.

According to Diokpa Orji Nwa Onye Odafe Ede Igbuzo,in Oshimili North local Government Delta State'Nna anyi wa debeli anyi Onwa na anyanwu ka anyi wee n'agu onwa na Ubosi wee malikwa oge bu aho ofu.(Our Ancestors gave us the moon and the sun to use in reckoning months, days and also to know when is the new year). For years many sons and daughters of Igbo land have diligently held on to this ancient system of counting. Before the advent of the christian calendar of 1582 popularly known as the Gregorian calendar the Igbos have been using a Lunisolar calendar that had a 13th month lunar system which synchronises with the solar year which occurs as a natural phenomenon. Who where the ancestors of the modern day Igbos and who gave them this scientific and astronomical calendar ?  Permit me in this article to share a great teaching and lecture I have received from an Mkpalor(holder of the ancient Sceptre of truth) and Ndi Ichie(ancient ordained legislative council) In the cosmology of things the world is governed by Chukwu who commands the Izu-Nzuko Eluigwe na Uwa.(The Most High commands the Host of Heaven and Earth and the time of their gathering before him.)

In the the Igbo Lunisolar calendar you have a unique system of reckoning time, the unit of time was the moon called onwa,it does not work independent of the sun, there is a synergy between these two illuminaries .In the system of things we have, Ubosi(Ubochi), Izukwu, Izu nta, Oge, Izu-Ogechi,Izu afia(Izu ashia) Izu-izuike, Izu-chiokike.Izu onwa-enu.Before we define what we have written above it is very pertinent to ask what is Izu in the Igbo lunisolar calendar? Many have been misled to translate Izu as week of 4 days. This translation is grossly deficient in rendition. Etymologically the word izu means a gathering, assembly, congregation, meeting, completeness, a whole,Izu could be used to describe the market days that occurs every 4 days but it is not limited to four days. As a young boy growing up in my community I withnessed my mother being invited for meetings of her fellow woman folk and the Oga Okpoho(the Spokes person) would say Nne Enyi Ochiligwe si ka m kpo I Izu(I have bee asked by the leader of the host of women folks to invite you for a meeting)Even when the Okpala Ukwu the oldest man of the town wants a meeting in 3 days time, 21 days time, 9 days time,12 days time,or even in a days time all were called and termed izu.So how did the ancient Igbos reckon time and the whole community understood themselves without being confused? The ancient Igbos counted time and days in 3s,in 4s,7s and in 8s.All count started after he sees the moon. The next day the count starts. His count starts from the new moon which he calls Nwa Okolo Igwe(First Crescent Moon).

The first four days after the sighting of the moon,he calls it izukwu because he believed that that was the gathering of the heavenly forces. This is inline with the torah in Gen 1:14-16 that makes us to understand that there is a celestial coming together of illuminaries, for effective order in the heavenly galaxy. The ancient Igbos saw the celestial host of heaven as messengers of the Most High. They saw the Most High as the Supreme Ochiligwe(commander of the Host of Heaven) that calls for assembly of the Mighty Oness. In Psalm 82:1 we are told YHWH standeth in the congregation(Izu) of the mighty;he judgeth among the elohims. The completness of the Most High was seen in his character of completeness(Izu-Oke) represented by Himself being in 4 characters(YHWH) on the 4th day he decreed times of meeting ,assembly or congregation. The ancient Igbos had izukwu which was 4 days and Izu nta which was 3 days note Izu nta the word nta meant less than the izukwu. That is why you hear such statements in Igbo language Anyi ga afu izu nta echi meaning we would see in three days time. The Igbos originally before the advent of the fixed calendar had a work week system which started after the newmoon. This work week system called Izu Chi-okike was made up of the Izukwu and Izu nta.The Igbo aphorism makes it clearer 'Aka Olu na Izukwu elie ife olu na izu nta. This simply means that if we effectively schedule our job effectively by working hard through izukwu( the count of four days after seeing the first crescent moon, then by the next third day which is izunta we rest and eat the fruits of our labour.)So we can see that the ancient igbos after sighting the new moon started their Izu okike count. So let's review what we have just read. What we have just seen is that when the First crescent moon is sighted, the next day the count started, the work week was divided into Izukwu and Izu nta.

So if we start the count after the sighting of the newmoon, then the Izukwu will be on the day 5 of the month, after 3 days which will be day 8 the izu nta there was rest from the work schedule. The ancient Igbos belived that the moon called Okoloigwe n'eti Igba which means the man in heaven that illuminates the world through its lunar drumbeat which occurs for 28 days. The ancient Igbos knew that the moon was in the sky for 28 days after 28 days the moon is not seen for about a day or two.During this period the ancient acknowledged that Onwa anagaa the month has gone heralding the month end.It should be noted that the ancient Igbos never termed the lunar conjunction the new moon, rather it was termed ngwusi onwa (month end).In ancient times It was marked with prayers because it was a waiting period for the coming new moon.So after the 28 days, and lunar conjuncture, when the First Visible Crescent is see the new moon celebration is herald by the Ohene Oli(the Priest of light) by the blowing of the mpianu(the animal horn) prayers are now made and the new moon is celebrated the next the count count continues.Note that the Izu ukwu had dual purpose the izukwu regulated the market days and while the izunta was used to regulate the resting days. The count of izukwu and izu nta regulated izu on the original Igbo observatory calendar the rest days and work days were counted separately. This means that after the new moon all the izunta will fall on the 8,15,22 the day after 28 was always treated as a resting day.Note in the original observatory calendar the month did not end on the 28th and that is not the new moon, what ended on the 28 was the lunar drum beat stopping the count for labour/market day regulation.

According to Diokpa Orji an Mpkalo Igbuzo, the 28 days count is not a complete month rather after the 28 days count, then comes onina onwa(lunar conjunction)which is the month end.It is only when you have seen the Nwa okoligwe(First Visible Moon) Nwa onwa(baby moon) that the count of the new moon starts. It means that if the day 5 was izukwu the market days for the month will be on 5,9,13,17,21,25 the next 4 days would been 29 but then the ancient stopped the count for market/labour on the 28th because the lunar drumbeat stopped on the 28th..The next day or 2 days was a resting/watch days.By so doing the ancient igbos observatory calendar obeyed the dictatates of the torah. In fact during the festival season especially during the feast of Ingathering(Iwa Iji)The Ohene Oli(the Priest) would go to disrupt the market this was called Igbagbu Ashie.A similar custom is done by the Obi of Issele Ukwu during the Ine Festival to celebrate the Ine Aho Ofu(the Lunisolar New year that comes up in spring time)The Obi also disrupts the market.A similar thing is recorded in the Bible book of Nehemiah.Market is not expected to be opened during rest or festival holy days.

It was latter just as Hillel the elder gave the Jews and all advocates of Judaism the fixed Jewish calendar that Eze Nri gave the Igbo nation fixed Igbo lunar calendar. The fixed lunar calendar only used the izukwu and threw away the Izunta. He went further to abolish the waiting period by fixing days in advance instead of obeying the natural phenomenon. The concept of divine council manifestation of the Tetragramaton was maintained by corrupting it with Egyptian coloration..The heavenly council represented by Father,Mother, son and daughter was adopted using Egyptian-Deity representation. This is seen as Eke,Orie,Afo and Nkwo. This entity make up the family divinity council.Eke derived from the chief deity of Nekhen of upper Egypt.A combination of the Word Chi-neke.The word Orie is the hebrew word for light,it was the day the celestial bodies were worshipped.Afo represented the stomach which is for new birth a mother. In Egyptian pantheon this was hatho(afo) while Nkwo represented Horus the god of the sky.Nkwo is the falcon(agu nkwo)(algoquine)this is the swift bird that had two swift eyes and is so great with flight .Nkwo represented Horus the sky deity its symbol was the falcon. The two eyes was the sun and the moon.So you can see that the Eze Nri fixed igbo calendar is a corruption of the original sacred calendar which was inline with the Torah.

This calendar did not focus the unity of the Igbos by holding on to the ancient aphorism and rule akaa na izukwu elie na izu nta which was the principle behind the weekly work system of 4 and 3 days which gave you the market/labour days and the resting days. This gave room for people to start paying too much emphasis on the market days and forgot the spirituality behind izukwu na izu nta.Any body could decide on any day that soothed him.Provided that you used any of the 4 days. This was not inline with the ancient order. To show that in Igbo language Izu does not absolutely mean a week of 4 days, when Christianity came which was a foreign religion,it was eazy to adopt Izu-Uka as the sunday to sunday meeting day without being confused. The concept of counting in,4,3,7,and in 8 have always been with the Igbos.Izu nta echi which is 3 days was also known as Oge.So Oge ato means 3 times 3 to give you 9 days.Oge Assaa means 3 times 7 which is 21 days.Izu ukwunabo or just izunabo(4times 2) will give you 8 days while izunta nabo will give 6 days(3 times 2)Note Izukwu assaa will give you 28 days.So from above we can see that the ancient Igbos used an observatory calendar of 28 lunar drum beats +1or 2 days make one month before the institutionalisation of the current fixed calendar which counts days in advance with out taking cognizance of the appearing of the moon and the waiting/watch days. The Igbo calender was like the ancient shawee Lunar calendar the only difference was that the ancient Igbo calendar was a 13th month calendar which is the only true calendar in synchrony with the solar years.Using 28 lunar drumbeat days times 13 will give us 364 days so it means that before we can celebrate the new year we are to count 13 lunar months.Which will gives 364 days. This means that if we must obey the torah effectively as written in Gen 1:14-16 we are to use the moon and the sun in our celebration of the year that means that 364 days would have passed in fact the new year comes about 365 days after 13th month.A lunar year of 12 month does not meet this characteristic because it is 354 days. And the Book of Ezekiel in chapters 1:1-2,3:16,4:1-11 gives us a sign of 13 month. The Scripture did not command about intercalation or the use of the leap year. The modern day usage of the metonic cycle by the Jewish Calendar is borrowed from babylo-sumerian culture which according to the Essenes is an abomination..From above it means that the ancient Igbos used the same calendar that Enock used that same calendar was used by the ancient Essenes. It boils down to one thing the that ancestors of the present day Igbos where the ancient Hebrew Israelite sect known as the Essenes- Isiyim. As we move back to the ancient Path may YHWH bless us. Shalom.
